It is with sadness the Board notes the death of Brian Cole after a period of ill health. Brian was appointed to the position of Chairman in September 1981 and held this office until his resignation in June 1993.

Brian brought to the Board wide ranging financial expertise having established a high public profile through his work which included practicing chartered accountant, partner and executive director of key accounting firms, director of various public companies, Chairman of Masonic Homes, Joint Company Secretary of Argo Investments etc.

In his role as Chairman, Brian was integral to the scheme’s early development and move towards operational independence. He was instrumental in the Board’s initiative to revise investment strategy and adopt a more diversified approach including exposure to equity markets and direct property. The improved investment performance became a key factor in the series of reductions in the levy rate that occurred.

He remains the longest serving Chairman in the history of the scheme, testimony to the independence he brought to the position and acceptance by Government and the construction industry alike.

Brian will be remembered for his compassion for staff, fellow Board members and industry clients. His dedication and untiring work remain significant contributors to the scheme’s success today.

Brian is survived by his wife Audrey and three sons.
